Advisors in the University College often advise students not to register for too many classes, to make sure that they have sufficient time to study and to do well in their classes.
Marc Keinath, a senior majoring in religion, did not find their advice to be in agreement with his own plans.
"Don't listen to your advisors. The only ones who help are the ones in your major, which doesn't help if you change your major," said Keinath.
"They advise freshman to take 12 credit hours, and you can't graduate in four years. Self-advise if you plan to graduate in any reasonable amount of time," Keinath added.
Based in Nevada, Mymajors.com offers an academic advising tool where students can enter information about their academic strengths and interests, and a report will be generated with five possible majors.
The organization advises students against choosing a major because it is associated with a high-income profession, but instead to choose a major based on interest.
A major is not a career and there are multiple career paths from a single major.
It also advises students to job shadow before committing to a major. Also, if a student enters college as an undecided major, they should keep all options open until a decision is made.
